History, Cultures & Coastal Communities of British Columbia, Canada

The oldest cultures to exist within the immense, British Columbia coastline, are those of the First Nations peoples.

Before the colonists arrived, a complex, richly artistic and spiritually connected community of people survived and thrived in a dynamic society that is now being relived through a strong, cultural renaissance. They held over 10,000 years of occupation upon this rugged terrain, known as the Coastal Temperate Rain Forest, or in local tongue, the wet coast.

Today, Native interpreters provide tour companies with narratives, dance, song and art demonstrations in a variety of venues. Local First Nations villages have provided access to ancient village sites as well as the opportunity to view contemporary and remote communities that have reclaimed their cultural icons and display them proudly in native-run cultural centers.

Chad and Leanne have worked and lived amongst many of the villages within coastal B.C. and with respect and honor, acknowledge the privilege given to them when offered an opportunity to bring guests into these sacred sites.

Their friend Tom Sewid offers tours of his families ancestral village, now abandoned, where you will feel the cultural richness of this site through stories that have been passed down from the elders and the mystical way in which the wildlife seems to know how highly they are revered.

Harvest middens, fish traps, canoe runs, culturally modified trees and totems slowly being reclaimed by nature all have stories of their own awaiting your discovery.

BC history recounts the advent of the colonists and their insatiable appetite for progress. The resource wealth that came with exploitation of new land can be readily seen on our travels through these protected, inner coastal water highways.

Abandoned logging camps and canneries, subdued into silence by the unrelenting coastal rainforest growth, may be explored as we guide you to the hidden history now resting beneath a blanket of green.
